CBS picks up New Jersey crime drama

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Justified writer-producer Gary Lennon has sold a script to CBS. The script revolves around the first female police chief in New Jersey. The character must battle crime and law-enforcement corruption as well as a difficult home life. If greenlighted to series, the drama would bring Jersey to broadcast at a time when shows set in the state are proliferating on cable.

CBS Television Studios is producing the project. Lennon and fellow Justified vets Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman are executive producing.

Do we really need another New Jersey TV show? One of the things that was great about Justified (besides some really interesting characters) was that it was set in a part of the country (Kentucky) that is rarely portrayed on TV. Shows like Justified, Memphis Beat and Treme are great because they take place in unique places that aren’t overdone on TV already. Not sure how well this project will go. Story sounds interesting, but why does it have to be set in New Jersey?
