NBC has ordered a pilot from Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler called Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, a comedy inspired by Handler’s life and the autobiography of the same name, which follows the lives of a group of twentysomethings living and working together led by a very outspoken young woman.
The show is produced by Warner Bros. TV with Good Humor Television and Borderline Amazing Productions (Handler’s company).
I’ve not read Handler’s books, but do enjoy her humor on Chelsea Lately. That being said, this idea sounds like a more crude version of Sex and the City. Hopefully not, because that would not do her comedy justice.
I was also worried that she was going to star in this. While I like her talk show and stand up act, she’s not a good actress. The only way a show about her and starring her could work is if it was similar to Larry David’s version of himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
