Video of Ricky Gervais on The Office

steve carell and ricky gervaisHere’s video of Ricky Gervais appearing on The Office as David Brent (the original Michael Scott on the British version of The Office).

One thing that was interesting was that, with a wink and a nudge, they brought up the fact that Steve Carell is leaving. Brent asked if there was any openings at Dunder Mifflin and Scott said no. Brent then asked Scott to keep him posted if there are any openings.

While a good behind the scenes joke, I don’t think this means Gervais will join the cast as the new branch manager of Dunder Mifflin. It’s fun to speculate, but there’s no way it will happen.

  1. I’m not kidding when I say that David Brent is one of the greatest television characters ever created. Ricky Gervais plays him so beautifully. He (Brent) is a complete ass and so delightfully smarmy that you just love watching him embarrass himself while he’s completely clueless.

That said, I don’t think he would be a good fit on the US version, but that’s more because I don’t think America would dig the whole British version concept as much. The humor was more subtle and very British (read that as dry).

So, like you, I don’t see him coming, but it’s a neat cameo. Any chance of a Tim cameo? Probably not.

    1. I agree 100% with you. Over the years, Michael Scott has gotten more outlandish (as all characters do as a series progresses). It would be hard to tone down the show in order to replace him a more dry David Brent. He’s less absurdest and probably wouldn’t fit as well with the rest of the cast this late in the show. Not to mention, American audiences just wouldn’t take to him.

But then again, I hate (most) British comedy and loved the UK The Office.
