IntoNow: Shazam for Your TV

There’s an app that I downloaded a while back that I thought, as an avid TV watcher, was pure genius. It’s a simple app with a simple premise: Find out everything you want to know about the TV you are watching. Let me explain.

Have you ever been sitting on the couch watching TV and wanted to know who this new actor is on your favorite show? Have you been trying to find the title of a specific episode of your favorite series? Well, if you answered yes to either of these questions, IntoNow is for you. It’s like Shazam for your TV. Simply launch the app and have it “listen” to the show you’re watching and it will return the series title, description, a cast list, a link to IMDB and Netflix, and, if available, a link to iTunes so you can purchase or rent the episode. Here’s the official description from the app store.

IntoNow makes engaging with your favorite TV shows easy, social, and fun. Just tap the green button when your favorite show is on and IntoNow will identify the show and episode; provide all data and links associated with it; and help you share on Facebook and Twitter. IntoNow also helps you see which shows you have in common with your friends — including whether they’ve seen the latest episode — and alerts you whenever you and a friend are watching the same show at the same time. Use it to discover new shows, discuss your favorites with your friends, and learn more about whatever you’re into now!

– Identify live TV, or anything that’s run on TV in the last five years, from your television, computer or mobile device.
– Get full episode and cast information, as well as info on future airings.
– Receive notifications when your friends are watching the same episode or show.
– Comment on what your friends are watching in the app, or on Facebook and Twitter.
– One-click access to IMDb, Netflix, and iTunes so you can learn more or start watching right away.
– Add new friends using Facebook, Twitter, your address book, or “search by name.”

The app is really quick and extremely accurate. I’ve tried it on reruns of How I Met Your Mother and House, as well as new shows like The Chicago Code. Each time, the app returned accurate results in a matter of seconds. It will be interesting to see how it does with sports when I begin watching Cardinals baseball this spring. Sounds pretty cool, huh? It doesn’t stop there though.

Similar to social networks like Miso and Get Glue, IntoNow allows you to check into the shows you’re watching and friend other people to follow what they are watching. If you like finding out about new shows, you might just find out about some if you follow enough people. It’s also a good way to see what is currently airing on TV. While I don’t use it for the social aspect, it is definitely a great app to have if you are a TV enthusiast that must know everything about a show.

You can download the app from the iTunes store for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.
