I have some bad news for lovers of Amy Pond and Rory (played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill), the Doctor’s current companions on Doctor Who. Executive Producer Steven Moffat recently announced that the companions will leave sometime during Series 7 of the hit British sci-fi show.
“The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series,” said Moffat, according to the show’s official Twitter feed. “Then The Doctor will meet a new friend.”
Amy has been the Doctor’s companion since Matt Smith took over the role of the Doctor in Series 5. Rory, her husband, became an official companion during Series 6. They have since become fan favorites, lasting longer than most companions. It will be sad to see them go but it wouldn’t be Doctor Who without the constant changing of companions (and eventually Doctors). No word on who the next companion will be or how Amy and Rory will exit and don’t expect to hear any spoilers. Moffat is notoriously tight-lipped about Who story lines.
Series 7 will premier in 2012 but the Doctor Who Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe airs stateside Dec. 25 at 9/8c on BBC America.
