We already knew that Amy and Rory were leaving Doctor Who, leaving us to question who the new companion(s) would be. Well, we now have an answer. Doctor Who executive producer Stephen Moffat announced that actress Jenna-Louise Coleman will play Matt Smith’s new companion following the departure of Karen Gillan (Amy) and Arthur Darvill (Rory) later this year.
“It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen,” Moffat said in a statement. “Jenna is going to lead him on his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy-meets-girl.”
Coleman’s previous credits include Captain America and the British soap opera Emmerdale.
Amy and Rory will be exiting the series in the 5th episode of the upcoming season.
While new companions are nothing new in the Whoniverse, I’m sad to see Amy and Rory leave. They are really good on the show. I really only started watching the series when Matt Smith took the role as The Doctor, so they’ve been the only companions I’ve actually watched regularly (save a few episodes of the David Tennant years). It will be interesting to see how the show plays out with this new companion.
